    Class Teacher: Mrs S. Hancock

Hello and a big welcome to our class page!

I’m Miss. Hancock, and I’m lucky enough to be teaching our amazing Year 6 children who are completing their last year of Primary education. We’ve got an exciting year ahead, packed with new adventures learning, creativity, and plenty of fun. There will be challenges, discoveries, and lots of opportunities to shine, and we can’t wait to share it all with you!

We love working together as a team, so if you have any brilliant ideas, useful resources, or just want to lend a helping hand with our topics, please get in touch. Your contributions make a huge difference and help make our classroom an even more exciting place to learn.

Keep checking back for updates, photos, and news about what we’ve been up to – it’s going to be an amazing journey!

    Important Information

    PE
PE is on a Thursday morning. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school on this day, including suitable footwear. A PE kit consists of a white T-shirt, navy bottoms and trainers. No jewellery, thank you.
    Reading

Your child will be given a reading book to bring to and from school every day. It’s important that the book comes back each day so they can enjoy reading time in class. When children have read a book, they will take a quiz on that book to support their understanding of texts. We encourage children to quiz weekly and change so that they can change their books whenever they’ve finished them.

Please keep supporting your child with their reading at home, by regular practice which really helps build confidence, fluency, and a love of reading!

    Spelling
We complete our spelling tests every Friday morning. The spelling lists for the week are available on Google Classroom, so you can check them anytime. Please make sure your child is practising the correct level regularly at home as little and often really does make a big difference!
    Maths

In Dosbarth Aur, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme. This gives us a clear, structured way to build strong mathematical understanding. Each lesson includes Growth Challenges, where pupils choose their own level of challenge to complete. This helps them take ownership of their learning and develop independence, resilience, and a positive attitude towards problem-solving.

    Our Spring term topic is
    'A Journey Through Time –
How Has Life Changed Since the 1970s?
    '

This term, we’re stepping back in time to explore what life was like in the 1970s and how it compares to today. Over the next few weeks, we’ll investigate how homes, fashion, culture, and technology shaped everyday life during this fascinating decade.

We’ll begin by looking at homes in the 1970s. What did they look like? How were they decorated? Pupils will explore family stories and photographs to discover bold patterns, bright colours, and the unique styles that made the decade stand out. They’ll also learn about daily routines.

Next, we’ll dive into clothes and culture. The 1970s were famous for flared trousers, platform shoes, and colourful prints! Pupils will research popular trends and music before creating their own retro outfits, bringing the decade’s style to life.

Finally, we’ll explore entertainment and technology. What did people watch and listen to before streaming and smartphones? Pupils will investigate classic TV shows, music, and games, and learn how people communicated without the internet. They’ll design posters, album covers, and storyboards, while discovering how technology has transformed the way we connect and enjoy entertainment.

Throughout this topic, children will use creative arts, digital tools, and research skills to compare ‘then’ and ‘now’, helping them understand how much life has changed in the past 50 years. It’s going to be a fun, creative journey through history!

    Our Autumn term topic is
    'What makes someone famous?'

This term, our theme is Our World, Many Voices and it’s going to be exciting! We’ll be thinking about what it means to be famous, how people use their voices to make a difference, and the legacies they leave behind.

We’ll learn about some incredible people, including Aneurin Bevan, who created the NHS so everyone could have free healthcare; Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web and changed the way we communicate; and Malala Yousafzai, who bravely spoke out for girls’ education and equality. Each of these role models demonstrated courage, determination, and a desire to make our world better.

Through this topic, we’ll explore big ideas like fame, legacy, activism, resilience, and impact. We’ll ask: How can people inspire change? and how can we use our own voices to make a positive difference?

This theme links lots of subjects, from history and citizenship to speaking, listening, and writing. It’s all about learning, thinking, and finding ways to make the world a better place.
