    Class Teacher: Miss H. Bennett

    Teaching Assistant: Miss J. Bishop

Hello and a warm welcome to our class page!

I’m Miss Bennett, and I’m delighted to be working alongside our fantastic teaching assistant, Miss Bishop, with our wonderful Year 1 pupils this year. We have an exciting year ahead filled with learning, creativity, and fun, and we can’t wait to share this journey with you.

If you have any ideas, resources, or support to offer for our current topic, please don’t hesitate to get in touch – your contributions are always appreciated.

    Share Your Celebrations!

As part of our themes, we’d love to learn that not all heroes wear a uniform.  This will allow pupils the opportunity to look at how different people help us in real life situations.

    Important Information

    PE
PE is every Monday afternoon. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school on this day, including suitable footwear. A PE kit consists of a white T-shirt, navy bottoms and trainers. No jewellery, thank you.
    Reading
Pupils will be given their designated reading day by the teacher, and this will be written inside their reading records. Children will be given an Oxford Reading Scheme book along with their reading record. Some pupils will move onto AR Reading scheme.  This scheme encouraged pupils to improve their reading comprehension.  When pupils return their books to school, they will sit a reading comprehension test before changing their reading books. We ask that you take time to read the book with your child, supporting and encouraging them as they develop their reading skills. Please write a short comment in their reading record about how they read, and how they found the book. All reading books and records should be returned to school only your child’s reading day so that your child can be given a new book to continue their reading journey.
    Spelling
Spellings will be placed on dojo every Monday morning.  Your child will be told which level of spellings that they will need to practice.  Spelling tests will then be on a Friday morning.
    Maths
We follow the White Rose Maths scheme to support our main maths teaching, and we use Tapas Maths to build and strengthen pupils’ mental maths skills. At the moment, the children are focusing on counting to 30, recognising numbers and developing accurate number formation, as well as beginning to work with these numbers in practical activities.

    Our Spring term topic is
    'A Journey Through Time –
How do things from the past change?
    '

In our topic A journey through time: How do things from the past change, children will travel back through history to discover how everyday life has changed over time. They will compare toys, homes, and modes of transport from the past with those we use today. By looking at real objects, photographs and stories, pupils will explore what life was like for children and families long ago and consider how new inventions have shaped the way we live now.

Learners will develop their understanding of chronology, begin to use historical vocabulary and recognise similarities and differences between different periods of time. This topic encourages curiosity, questioning and careful observation as children build a picture of how life has changed—and in some ways stayed the same—throughout history.

    Our Autumn term topic is
    'Not all Heroes Wear Uniforms'

In our topic Not all heroes wear a uniform, children will explore the idea that heroes can be found all around us—not just in uniforms like police officers, firefighters, or doctors, but in everyday life. We will look closely at the important roles played by people at home, school, and in the wider community, and how their actions make a positive difference.

Pupils will learn to recognise that heroism isn’t always about dramatic actions; sometimes it’s shown through kindness, responsibility, and helping others. By studying real examples, children will develop an understanding of gratitude, empathy, and respect for the many individuals who contribute to their wellbeing and the world around them.
