Class Teacher: Miss L. Kerr Hello and a warm welcome to our class page. I’m Miss Kerr, and I’m delighted to be teaching our wonderful Year 3 pupils this year. We follow the Curriculum for Wales, with lots of exciting opportunities for learning, creativity, and fun along the way. There is an emphasis on learning through hands on activities which we try to incorporate into our learning timetables as often as possible. If you have any ideas, resources, or support to offer for our current topic, please don’t hesitate to get in touch – your contributions are always appreciated. |
Important Information
PE |

| PE is every Tuesday. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school on this day, including suitable footwear. A PE kit consists of a white T-shirt, black/navy bottoms and trainers. No jewellery, thank you. |

Reading |
|
| Your child will be supplied with a reading book that needs to be carried to and from school every day. The children will be able to change their books during reading time, whenever they have completed their book. Please continue to support your child with their reading at home to help develop their ability and fluency. |

Spelling |

| Spellings lists will be handed out and tests will be on a Friday morning. | |
Maths |

In our class, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme, which provides a clear, structured approach to developing mathematical understanding. Each lesson is presented through a ‘Growth Challenge’, giving learners the opportunity to choose their own level of challenge and take ownership of their learning. This approach encourages independence, resilience and a positive attitude towards problem-solving. We also use TAPAS maths warm-ups to keep key skills sharp and ensure children regularly revisit and consolidate important mathematical concepts. To support fluency, we use TTRockstars to help pupils build confidence, speed and accuracy with their times tables. Regular practice helps children apply their knowledge in lessons and strengthens their overall mathematical skills. Our aim is to make maths engaging, accessible and challenging for all learners. |

Our Autumn term topic is
'What is the same about living through war in the past and today?'
During the Autumn Term, Year 4 will explore the enquiry question “What is the same about living through war in the past and today?” through a study of children’s experiences during World War II and comparisons with the experiences of children living through conflict today.
Learners will discover what life was like for children during World War II, including evacuation, rationing, air raids, shelters and changes to everyday life. They will explore why children were evacuated, how families adapted to shortages and how the war affected children in different ways. Through stories and historical sources, pupils will develop an understanding that not every child experienced the war in the same way.
The children will investigate the experiences of people living through conflict today and consider both the similarities and differences between past and present. They will explore how families may be affected by leaving their homes, disruption to education, fear and uncertainty, while also learning about the support provided by charities and communities.
Throughout the topic, pupils will develop their historical enquiry, empathy, communication and critical-thinking skills through research, discussion, drama, creative writing and source investigation. They will ultimately use what they have learned to answer our Big Question and consider what experiences of living through war may have remained the same, and what has changed, over time.
